A linear synthetic polymer composed of 85% or more of polyurethane is called spandex. 1937 German
Bayer succeeded in synthesizing the linear polyurethane, but its properties are similar to those of nylon,
Production ceased. Then in 1958, DuPont in the United States produced fiber K, and in 1959, it was finally out it market as lycra. It is superior in strength and durability to rubber.

Spandex looks like a stick with a uniform thickness like other fibers, with a section of peanut or dog bone.
Fused in many places, this fusion prevents fibers from escaping from the yarn, gives flexibility
Makes you feel better. The strength is 0.7 g / d, the elongation is 500-600%, and the elasticity recovery rate is 95-99%.
The moisture content is low at 0.3-1.2% and is generally white but is easily applied evenly to the dye.
It is not directly dyed, but good color can be obtained by acidic or disperse dyes.
If left on fire, it leaves sticky ash, and safe ironing temperature is less than 150 degrees. It is safe in the dryer, and lycra fiber has a low melting point of 175-280 degrees. The strength is weakened by the high-temperature strong alkali. Resistance to dry cleaning solvents, cosmetics and other oils is superior to rubber. It is yellowed by daylight and its strength is reduced by long daylight, but it is better than rubber.

It is woven with other fibers or twisted together with other fibers to make covered yarn or core yarn and made into elastic fiber.
It is used for bra, corset, swimwear, socks, slacks, jumper, sportswear, supporters, bandage, hair band, mattress covers and so on. Urethane foam is used as lining or outer material for covering. It is light, flexible, and used for children's wear, rest room and so on because it is warm enough.
Spandex has many problems in its processing method as well as its unique properties of elongation and contraction.

To use spandex,

1) use fabric in original form
2) cover up other fabric on filament
3) using filament as core spandex
4) using with other fabrics such as rayon staples

Lycra is a multi-filament, and different from natural rubber such as Vyrene. Lycra is lightweight while spandex is used in short-width fabric such as swimsuit or sportswear. Swimsuit should be processed in chlorine solution while sportswear requires availability in water-cleaning.
Stretch materials of various colors and fitting silhouette have been introduced since 1997. People are paying more attention to these high-functioning fabrics.
