Human beings keep stable metabolism by homeostasis occuring due to interaction between toxins and bodily cells.

But if toxins keep invading organisms, then homeostasis is compromised to obstruct organism’s functions. It implies dose-response relationship between toxins and organisms.

If exposure is considered to be safe enough, then threshold can be set to keep workers safe from toxins.

▒ In Korea, toxin threshold is defined in Ministry of Labor Notice (Article 88-69).

① "Allowable concentration" means the concentration that does not adversely affect the health of almost all workers at the level below the allowable concentration level when workers are exposed to harmful substances. The time-weighted average concentration (TWA) is indicated by the short-term exposure allowable concentration (STEL).
② Time Weighted Average Concentration refers to the concentration obtained by dividing the measurement concentration of harmful factors by the time of occurrence and dividing by 8 hours, based on 8-hour work per day.

...........(C1T1 + C2T2 + ....+CnTn) / 8
...........C : measured toxin concentration (ppm or mg/㎥)
...........T : toxin generation time (time)

③ STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit)" means the allowable concentration when workers are exposed to harmful factors for 15 minutes at a time. Under this concentration, if the exposure interval is more than 1 day, it is the acceptable concentration.
④ Ceiling concentration is the maximum threshold which worker should never be exposed even for a day. It is expressed by putting “C” in front of the threshold.
